
Phil Slater is a trumpeter, composer, and band leader living and working in the Illawarra region of Australia. He is the leader or co-leader of the Phil Slater Quartet, Band of Five Names, Daorum, Strobe Coma Virgo, and the Sun Songbook. He has published many recorded works, including Band of Five Names (1999); Strobe Coma Virgo (2002); Severence (2002); The Thousands (2007); Empty Gardens (2006); Daorum (2008); and On Running (2016).
Phil often works in close collaboration with other musicians, most notably Matt McMahon, Simon Barker, and Carl Dewhurst. He has performed and recorded with a diverse range of other Australian and international artists including The Australian Art Orchestra, AustraLysis, Baecastuff, Dale Barlow, Jim Black, DIG, Sandy Evans, Paul Grabowsky, Missy Higgins, Vince Jones, Andrea Keller, Genevieve Lacey, Bernie McGann, Mike Nock, Katie Noonan, Bobby Previte, PNAU, Prop, Lou Reed, Archie Roach, Gian Slater, and Jonathan Zwartz.
Phil has composed and performed music for theatre, television, and cinema, including contributing to the productions of The Sydney Theatre Company (The Sunshine Club dir. Wesley Enoch; Mother Courage dir. Robyn Nevin; Gallipoli dir. Nigel Jameson; King Lear dir. Neal Armfield); Belvoir Street Theatre (Stuff Happens dir. Neal Armfield; Exit the King dir. Neal Armfield); Legs on the Wall (The Tale of Samulnori dir. Patrick Nolan). Television and cinema performances include Wild Side; Shiner; Grass Roots; Gallipoli; The Bank; Candy; Holding the Man; Beaconsfield; Howzat!: Kerry Packer’s War; My Mother Frank; Me, Myself, and I; Sample People; and Puberty Blues.
In 2009 Phil began collaborating with Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe on a number projects emerging from the late composer’s landscape-inspired works. This music was featured in several performances including Sculthorpe Remix (2009) with Katie Noonan and Tim Freedman and The Sun Songbook (2010).
Phil has been awarded the National Jazz Award; the Bell Award for Australian Jazz Musician of the Year; the Bell Award for Best Contemporary Australian Jazz Ensemble; the Limelight Award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Jazz; and the Freedman Fellowship.
Phil is a lecturer in Jazz at The University of Sydney and is currently completing PhD research into enactivist and ecological approaches to musical skill acquisition and performance.
